The O-punny Builds a Website

The ever-curious O-punny, the OG, the Original Opossum Bunny, decided it was finally time to build a website.

Having never built one before, he enlisted the help of an AI assistant.

The assistant confidently assured him this would be straightforward.

It was not.

The O-punny registered a domain.

The assistant explained Cloudflare.

Cloudflare explained that Cloudflare had other plans.

The first deployment failed.

Then another.

The website existed.

The website insisted it did not.

There were 404 errors. There were DNS errors. There were Workers. There were Pages. There were Routes. There were enough different screens named “Domains” that, by the end of the day, neither participant could remember which one they were looking at.

Eventually, the website appeared.

Then only half of it appeared.

Then only the version without www appeared.

The O-punny remained curious.

The assistant remained… optimistic.

The Wildcard Incident

At one point, the O-punny presented a routing rule that looked like this:

*somethingwenthorriblywrong.com/*

The assistant examined it and confidently said:

“Remove the leading wildcard.”

The O-punny looked at the rule. Then looked back at the assistant.

“But that’s exactly what I want it to do.”

The assistant insisted.

The O-punny reluctantly followed the advice.

For approximately 90 minutes, they investigated every other possible explanation.

Eventually, the O-punny restored the wildcard.

The website immediately began behaving correctly.

The assistant checked the current Cloudflare documentation.

The documentation agreed with the O-punny.

The assistant apologized.

The O-punny unpacked another box.

Lessons Learned

• Curiosity is more useful than certainty.
• Reading the current documentation beats remembering the old documentation.
• Cloudflare contains an impressive number of pages named “Domains.”
• Sometimes the AI is right.
• Sometimes the O-punny is right.
• Sometimes the website simply wants to live up to its own name.
• AI can make mistakes. Verify important information before acting on it.

Postscript

One habit you’ll see throughout this website is that the O-punny frequently asks the AI to check its own work.

Sometimes it discovers a mistake.

Sometimes it confidently confirms the same mistake.

Sometimes it changes its mind after seeing one more clue.

One day, this habit will almost certainly come back to bite the O-punny in the ass.

Until then, the O-punny will continue asking:

“Are you sure?”

Because curiosity isn’t about proving someone wrong. It’s about caring enough to ask one more question.
